Depression At A Glance

Depression has been implicated in a host of mental and physical ailments. It is characterized by mood swings, decreased self-confidence, and lack of enthusiasm. For diagnoses, it is pivotal that the patient realizes that he/she is being affected by depression.

Depression can be regarded as a state of mind, in which a person’s capability of enjoying life is minimized. If proper medical help is not sought for, it gradually eliminates the sufferer’s self-confidence and makes it difficult for him or her to overcome the difficulties of life. Life has no meaning for such people and their previously colorful life of zeal, zest and enthusiasm becomes deserted and barren. The affected person feels a flaming pessimism. Only a few fortunate people travel through the journey of life without being influenced by depression. Most people are either themselves the target of depression, or have close relatives or friends experiencing it.

Most of us would agree to have come across people in a state of depression. Also, it is common to have observed that the influence of depression varies from person to person, and is not the same for everyone. The symptoms and the severity of depression depend upon the actual reason that led to it. When under the influence of depression, a person considers himself/herself worthless and unmotivated to carry out normal routine activities. To top it up, there is an overall feeling of melancholy towards life.

The absence of hope in the sufferers can make them more inclined towards the darker side of life. People close to the sufferer are also affected, as they try their best to uplift their mood and emotions.

Depression is itself a major cause of sickness, so that the sufferer becomes weak due to loss of immune function. Decision-making skills are also affected, leading to a mental state in which daily chores feel like burden. Daily household life is neglected, and so the patient’s employment, sleep and appetite are affected at the same time. Depression affects all aspects of life, and in particular the patient’s self-perception.

Anxiety is usually observed to coexist with depression. It leads people to avoid the once enjoyed social activities and social gatherings. The urge to withdraw from socializing is strong but once a person gives in to it, depression takes its toll. This is because there is no outlet to divert the person from his depressive emotional state. In a similar manner, alcoholic drinks and use of unlawful drugs worsen the condition.

Untreated depression is known to lead to suicidal thoughts. This leads to a perplexed situation to an already perplexed mind, in which the sufferer does not want to die, but at the same time, he or she cannot endure the thought of living with depression. Seeking immediate medical attention is very important at this critical stage.

Compassion from loved ones is one line of defense against relapse of depression. It is vitally important for the patient to negate all thoughts of self-pity. If you think you are suffering from depression, you should take an appointment from your general physician, who can diagnose your sickness, or as in some cases, refer you to a psychiatrist.
