The effects of depression
Many people suffer from depression at some time in their life; it is becoming increasingly common for people to become depressed especially with the pressures of work, home and family life. For the few that have never suffered depression themselves; it is usually for them to know someone who has gone through it in one form or another.
How severe the depression is and how it actually affects a person is different from one case to the next; as it is more about how that person can cope with the effects of having depression. It can range from the mild to the extremely severe in which a sufferer may take their own lives.
People suffering from depression tend to feel worthless and unable to cope with the basic day to day life; others may not even be able to get out of bed in a morning; some people may suffer from insomnia through the depression and confidence is shot to pieces and it can feel that the whole world has turned against them.
The negativity that usually comes from someone who is depressed can affect other members of the family or close friends; they can project those feelings of sadness and utter failure to others and possibly make them feel the same way.
Depression can create a cover over the person that they used to be; a previously happy go lucky person may be a recluse; locked away in their own homes. Distorted thinking may make them think that they are fine and not seek the help they need; little do they know that the more they sink into that trap and leave it untreated; the more depressed they will become.
Many doctors prescribe ‘happy’ pills to patients that are depressed and while this is fine for those perks; they do not get rid of the existing problem; there is obviously something in their life’s that is causing the depression and the pills only cover this up; they do not heal the wound.
Unfortunately the rate of suicide in depressed people can be quite high and can range from the very young to the old. Teenagers are committing suicide and becoming depressed about bullying and pressures of school and life. They feel they have nowhere to turn and the only way to make it better for them and for everyone else is to leave this world. As sad as this sounds; suicides in depressed teenagers is more common then what is first thought.
Depression needs to be treated not only by the use pills but also by therapy and talking out any problems in their life’s; to become depressed there is usually a reason; and that reason needs to be identified and solved as soon as possible. The consequences of leaving depression untreated for any amount of time can be catastrophic; so if you’re a sufferer yourself; or you know someone who is; then please contact a health professional as soon as you can; depression doesn’t last forever and it can be treated and banished. |
